Program Description

The Legion Healthcare Partners Proton Beam Radiation Therapy Certificate program offers a post-primary educational opportunity for registered Radiation Therapists, currently or previously working in proton beam radiation therapy, who desire to increase their knowledge of the principles and practices of proton beam radiation therapy. This program has been designed to meet to the standards of the proposed ARRT Proton Beam Radiation Therapist recognition.

This certificate course will meet the requirement of 16 hours of structured education as recommended for recognition in Proton Beam Radiation Therapy and 16 hours of ARRT continuing education opportunities. Instructional components consist of online, module-based didactic instruction and clinical requirements. Radiation therapists successfully meeting all objectives of the program will receive a Certificate of Completion.

Demonstrate an understanding of the tenets of patient care as related to radiation therapy/proton therapy, including legal and ethical implications.

Describe the fundamental principles of proton physics and the correlation to patient simulation and treatment.

Possess an understanding of proton therapy equipment variances and necessary quality management standards.

Discuss anatomical structures and pathologies in relation to proton treatment portal sites.

5

Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of patient set-up, simulation, and treatment delivery specific to proton therapy.

Describe basic concepts of dosimetry and treatment planning options for proton therapy.

Program Overview

  • Course Offerings

    16 one-hour modules comprising topics as required by the ARRT in the following content categories:

    • Patient Care in Proton Therapy
    • Safety in Proton Therapy
    • Procedures in Proton Therapy

  • Clinical Component

    Participants are required to complete clinical procedures, as recommended by the ARRT, from the categories below.

    • Specific Procedural Requirements Include:
      • Patient Immobilization Devices
      • Abdomen, pelvis, GI and GU
      •  Treatments
        • CNS
        • Head and Neck
        • Thorax
        • Breast
        • Abdomen, Pelvis, GI, and GU
    • A total of 75 repetitions (overall) is required.
    • Simulated procedures do not qualify. All clinical procedures must be performed on actual patients.

Requirements

  • Must submit a completed Legion Healthcare Partners Proton Beam Radiation Therapy Certificate application.
  • Must be a graduate of an American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) approved radiation therapy program.
  • Must be a registered Radiation Therapist in good standing; and must submit proof of current certification or eligibility.
  • Experience working in PBRT as a radiation therapist [currently or previously].
  • Verification from employer designating full-time performance as a proton beam radiation therapist.
