Program Objectives

1

Demonstrate an understanding of the tenets of patient care as related to radiation therapy/proton therapy, including legal and ethical implications.

Describe the fundamental principles of proton physics and the correlation to patient simulation and treatment.

Possess an understanding of proton therapy equipment variances and necessary quality management standards.

4

Discuss anatomical structures and pathologies in relation to proton treatment portal sites.

5

Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of patient set-up, simulation, and treatment delivery specific to proton therapy.

Describe comprehensive concepts of dosimetry and treatment planning options for proton therapy.

PROTON BEAM MEDICAL DOSIMETRY CERTIFICATE

Program Overview

  • Course Offerings

    16 one-hour modules comprising topics in the following foundational content categories:

    • Patient Care in Proton Therapy
    • Safety in Proton Therapy
    • Procedures in Proton Therapy
  • Clinical Component

    Participants are required to complete clinical procedures and treatment planning exercises from the categories below.

    Specific Procedural Requirements Include:

    • Observation of Patient Immobilization Devices:
      • Thermoplastic mold
      • Custom immobilization
    • Treatment Planning by Site:
      • Prostate
      • Lung / Thorax
      • Intracranial
    • A total of 15 treatment planning exercises [5 from each site] are required:
      • Treatment planning exercises are developed by clinical advisors who will instruct comprehensive planning techniques for each of the defined treatment sites.
      • Treatment planning objectives, standards, and timelines are defined by clinical advisors.
      • A total of 15 treatment plans, 5 repetitions from each of the 3 sites, to be reviewed by clinical advisors.
      • Participants are required to attend virtual group learning sessions held by clinical advisors.
    • Remote Treatment Planning Portal – provided by RaySearch Laboratories
      • Participants receive introductory RayStation training and instruction.
      • Virtual learning sessions, along with online training materials, presented by RaySearch trainers.
      • Six months access to the treatment planning portal, clinical advisors, and training materials.

Requirements

  • Must submit a completed Legion Healthcare Partners Proton Beam Dosimetry Certificate application.
  • Must be a certified medical dosimetrist in good standing, or a current student in an accredited dosimetry education program, and must submit proof of current certification or eligibility.
  • Experience working as a dosimetrist (proton or photon).
  • Verification from an employer or program director designating full-time performance as a dosimetrist or dosimetry student.
